Review: Unashamed- Building 429
By Abby Phillips
Widely-acclaimed band, Building 429, released their ninth studio album, Unashamed, on September 25, 2015. Fans will not be disappointed with the work displayed on this album, as Unashamed contains the positive, uplifting music that Building 429 is famous for creating. The songs on Unashamed are consistent with Building 429’s theme verse, Ephesians 4:29, which says, “No foul language is to come from your mouth, but only what is good for building up someone in need, so that it gives grace to those who hear.”(HCSB)
Unashamed starts off strong with the first track, “Eyes Up,” an extremely catchy and energizing song. “Eyes Up” is a beacon of hope to all who are discouraged and weary, telling them that “We’ve got a God who’s bigger yet, and the world is still in His hands.” In addition, “Eyes Up” displays two of the band’s musical specialties: a melodic keyboard intro and an upbeat drum pattern. With this song, Building 429 reminds us that instead of looking at the world negatively, we can “keep our eyes up,” because “God is always on our side.”
My favorite track on the album was “Impossible,” the radio single from Unashamed. This spectacular song came out on April 29, 2015. “Impossible” is my favorite song, one of many I have heard based on Philippians 4:13, which says, “…I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” (NLT) Building 429 has displayed their strength in making scriptures come to life in song through hits such as “Press On” (We Won’t Be Shaken) and others. “Impossible” certainly has a place among these. The style of this song is truly unique to Building 429, it contains a little pop, a little rock, and a lot of stylish flair. Encouraging listeners to keep reaching for their dreams, “Impossible” proclaims that, “Nothing is unreachable when we trust the God of miracles.”
A few other songs on Unashamed stuck out for me. “Ocean Deep” paints a beautiful picture of God’smercy. This song starts by describing a typical scenario among Christians: we know God loves us, but we try to earn His love. This mindset is expressed in the lyrics, “We think if we fail, somehow You won’t be enough.” The chorus washes over all doubts and proclaims that God’s mercy is an “ocean deep.” It reassures us that He loves us so much that nothing we could ever do could overcome this wonderful love.
“GO,” track no. 5, seems to be the band’s testimony. This powerful song is Building 429’s proclamation to God, telling Him that “If You say go, I’ll never say no.” This track seems to be a conclusion they have come to after years in the music ministry: that they will go wherever God is leading them, no matter what it looks like. This song is a reminder to us all that God’s way is always the best.
Unashamed is another strong album from Building 429. The messages behind these songs have definitely stayed true to the band’s original theme. As far as style, this album sounds slightly less rock than their last album, We Won’t Be Shaken, and more pop like some of their earlier hits, such as “Listen to the Sound.” However, the songs are equally convicting and truthful, and I think that listeners will not be disappointed with Unashamed. I hope, along with the band, that this album will encourage and inspire many to be unashamed of Christ.
