Nana’s Gift by Janette Oke is a book with deep feeling and faith. It shows how total love and devotion can make you strive to show it. It is a story about a treasure, a string of perfect pearls. But the pearls aren’t the treasure – they are just the symbol. The love behind the pearls becomes the family story and is the real treasure.
Duncan and Lizzie have been married thirty-six years. Duncan has saved up for that long to buy the pearls for his wife. This sacrificial gift becomes the family legacy. Years after Duncan dies, Lizzie still has the pearls. Every granddaughter and great-granddaughter that gets married will have them to wear, if they want to. But as the years go by, the girls get more modern. And the legacy of love still sits on the dusty shelf.
But then Beth steps in. She loves to have tea parties with her Nana, and get dressed up. Then she grows up, and Nana gets older. One day, Beth announces she’s going to get married. She turns to Nana and says she wants to wear the pearls with her wedding dress. Duncan and Lizzie’s last Great-granddaughter wants to pick up and carry on their legacy!
But then Beth has an accident and she looses hope. Cripples don’t get married, she tells herself. But Nana explains to her what life is. It’s a temporary thing. It won’t last for long. And she tells her Beth that God has a plan and He has worked it out. And then we see He has his own new chapter for her in the story of love.
This book is amazing. I cry every time I read it. It truly shows how much love can be in someone, even in this fallen world. You need to read this book. Its cover reads, “Some things in this world are very expensive, but others are priceless.” This short sentence sums up the whole book.
I absolutely recommend this book. Janette Oke has done a fabulous job on this work of art. I give it 5 stars.
