Interview with Keturah Lamb
1) Recently you have been published in a project called "Mythic Orbits," available here. Is this your first time being published? How does it feel? How long did the project take? This is my first time being published in print! I originally wrote Unerella about four years ago as a guest post on the Godly Girls For God blog. At the time my story was titled UnChosen Girl and it had a more blog-type ending which I had to rewrite once Travis Perry accepted it for the Mythic Orbits Volume 2 collection. Writing that new ending was one of the hardest things I've written - but one of the best things, too, decision wise. And so the ending of Unerella is very special to me. There were a few rounds of edits after that, but the ending rewrite was the biggest thing. After being accepted the entire follow-up process too about a year and involved little struggle. I'm really happy, to say the least! I love this little story so much and have an idea to turn it into a full length novel. I'm beyond excited to be able to share the short story with the world for now, though. 2) This is "speculative Christian fiction" - for those less familiar, how would you elaborate on the genre? Is this your favorite? Speculative fiction deals with "what if's" in a different setting other than what is reality. This includes science fiction, fantasy, horror, dystopian, and so on. It's actually one of my least favorites. I prefer to write stories that could be real. Fairytale is the only speculative genre I really love to write, though I enjoy reading some fantasy. 3) "Mythic Orbits" has been applauded by a NY Times Bestselling Author, and other award winning authors. Do you know any of the other authors you were published with? I do not know any of them, though I am friends with many of them through social media and online writing groups. I'm pretty sure I've only met Travis Perry in person. 4) What inspired you to write your piece, "Unerella?" Have you written any other stories with themes or origins of fairy tales - spin offs, perhaps I can call them? Oh, my that's a really hard question to answer. I think when I first wrote the story I was trying to get over a crush? Whenever you like someone you always think, "Is this Prince Charming?" But then an even more horrible thought dawned on me, "What if I'm not Cinderella?" And then I wondered what Cinderella's ball was like for all the other girls attending. So much that I had to write the story and so I did, making it one of my first short stories to write and complete. And, yes, I have written many other fairytales! Two more of them are being published in Agorist Writer's Workshop Clarion Call Volume 4 "Fairytale Riot". The one story is a retelling of the pied piper story mixed with the history of the Waldensians, an early Christian Church. It is called "The Piper's Last Song" The second one, "Prince Perfect" and is about an arrogant prince looking for the perfect bride and meeting all the fairytale princesses on his way, finding fault with everyone. I have others I've written, too. I'm currently trying to pitch my novel, The Fur Slipper. It's set in ancient Egypt and is about a young girl being forced behind her uncle to leave her childhood-friend-turned-lover to attend the Pharaoh's feast and hopefully become his bride. It's a retelling of the original Cinderella story meshed with a biblical theme of Esther. 5) You've been associated with GGFG since January 2015, running your blog which contains stories since August 2014, but when did you start writing? Are you working on any other projects you expect to publish at this time? My blog Keturah's Korner http://keturahskorner.blogspot.com/ I've been writing since before I can remember! I love it so much. But I didn't really become serious about it until I was 16. There's the Fairytale Riot book I mentioned above https://www.agoristwritersworkshop.com/ I'm currently writing a contemporary novel called "Let Me Meet Death Dancing" and is about a young girl trying to find her identity after a rough break up. 6) What advice do you have for girls who'd like to be published one day? Write! Write every day! Write what you're passionate about. Don't just write words . . . Write stories that mean something to you. And then don't be afraid of rejections. Send you stories to friends. Make your stories better. Send them to the world. And continue making them better until you find the home for your story. 7) What's one thing God has taught you through this projector the writing process in general? That it's OK to write what we're passionate about and you never know what you can learn. Also that there's always more to learn. I had no idea I could rewrite the ending for that story. I learned a lot doing that. I've also learned how to trust my writing to God, that He'll help me find the home for it, wherever that might be. I just have to write and smile and love people. Which is a lot, but at least there's no stress. |
