Seventh Day Slumber
Interview with Seventh Day Slumber
Seventh Day Slumber is a Christian rock band formed in 1996 in Dallas, Texas at Christ for the Nations where lead singer, Joseph Rojas, attended. The band is best known for their creative music, much is influenced by Rojas’s past experiences. Their latest album, We Are the Broken, was released on May 13, 2014.
Q: From 15 years of songwriting, what has been your favorite song to write or record?
A: My favorite would have to be "Trust in Me" on our new album, "We are the Broken." Whenever I wrote this song, I was going through a difficult time when I just didn’t know what to do. This song reminds me that no matter what’s going on, God has it under control.
Q: So is that your favorite song on the new album?
A: I really like "Goodbye." I love the guitar parts and it’s just an overall upbeat song with a good message.
: On your new album, you covered Demi Lovato’s "Skyscraper." What prompted that decision?
A: Well, Demi went through a major season of addiction and depression and she was able to overcome it. "Skyscraper" is about that. About rising from your issues and using your experiences to make you stronger.
Q: Can you tell us how Seventh Day Slumber was formed?
A: SDS was formed at Christ for the Nations in Dallas, Texas. While in attendance there, I met a few guys and God took it from there.
Q: What’s the reason for the name of SDS?
A: A friend of mine actually came up with the same. The name comes from Genesis 2:2 where on the seventh day after creating the universe, God rested.
Q: Can you tell me the most difficult part of living on a bus?
A: Definitely when the bus breaks down. There are so many moving parts that have to be right in order for the bus to work, and sometimes they don’t function correctly and we have to deal with it. However, it’s not too bad, especially because we know that the bus is being used to its full potential.
Q: Can you tell me what was going through your mind when you accepted Christ into your life?
A: Not a whole lot, actually. I had a $400 a day cocaine addiction, and one day I just decided to end it all. I overdosed on cocaine and my mom walked in the house when I was barely conscious on the floor. On the way to the hospital in the ambulance, I just remember feeling God’s presence. If God still wanted me, I wanted to walk with Him forever.
Q: Now, I’m curious, how hard was it jumping straight into Bible College after becoming a Christian?
A: It probably wasn’t the best decision, honestly. I may have cleaned up by not using drugs and such anymore, but I hadn’t cleaned up verbally. I think that the other students were very shocked at my language. It took me a few months to realize that cussing almost every other word wasn’t right.
Q: My favorite song on your album "Anthem of Angels" is One Mistake. What was your inspiration for that song?
A: I wrote this song last year when I felt like I was making a lot of mistakes in my Christian walk. We were done touring, and I really just felt worn out. One night, I allowed myself, a married man, to go on a website that I shouldn’t have. I woke my wife up in the middle of the night and told her what I did. And even though she kept telling me that today was a new day, I still felt like I was one mistake away from God giving up on me. But I know that God hasn’t changed His mind about me and He never will.
Q: Do you have a go to bible verse?
A: Yes. I really like Philippians 4:13 which says "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength." Anytime I have doubts about myself or what I’m doing, I remember this verse.
Q: My best friend is with me right now, and she accepted Jesus last night. She wanted to know, do you have any advice for new believers?
A: First of all, I would like to congratulate you on your choice. I want you to know that not everything will be peachy because you have God now. The only change is now you have someone who you can go to for strength. God’s plan for you is better than anyone else’s. I would advise you to stay involved with uplifting people. And I know some people measure God’s love like we measure our parents love, but God’s love is unconditional. We donít have to earn it and He won’t ever take it away from us. Don’t beat yourself up for making mistakes. The best thing you can do is get back up and try again. God will never leave you.
Q: As you know, we are a website for teenage and preteen girls. If you could tell us anything, what would it be?
A: I’d tell you to quit looking at everyone else to tell you who you are. Because, when it comes to knowing you, people can’t be more clueless. They don’t know a thing about you, but God knows the number of hairs on your head. Girls today cut their arms, purposely throw up, refrain from eating, just so they can look like the cover of a magazine; an airbrushed lie. Don’t believe the lie!
Thank you so much, Joseph for encouraging today’s youth through your music!
