Something Different- Sidewalk Prophets The highly-anticipated album from Sidewalk Prophets, Something Different, was released on August 28th, 2015. During the three years between albums, the band Sidewalk Prophets has refined their musical style, with great success. With its diverse musical style and musicality, Something Different is an album that will appeal to all listeners. It has a definite message for every believer: be different from the world. This message is expressed through all the tracks, thereby achieving a continuous theme throughout the album.
Something Different starts off with a bang; as track no. 1 is the current radio single, “Prodigal.” “Prodigal” is a call to all who have run away from Christ, telling them, “Wherever you are, whatever you did, it’s a page in your book, but it isn’t the end.” It encourages anyone who has wandered to come home to their Heavenly Father, like the parable of the Prodigal Son in the Bible. At the climax of the song, the bridge paints a heartwarming picture, stating, “Your Father’s not waiting, no, He’s running too…straight for you.”
The album goes even deeper with the next two songs, “If You Only Knew” and “Something Different.” “If You Only Knew”, a beautiful and lyrical piece, is written like an ongoing conversation between an anxious person and God. The lyrics stress that God’s unconditional love for us is greater than any sin, doubt, or fear that we carry, a theme Christians today need to hear.
“Something Different,” the title track of the album, is definitely the most upbeat and hard hitting song on the recording. It boldly proclaims how Christians are different from the world, and how the world needs that “something different” that we Christians possess.
If you attended Sidewalk Prophets’ Great Big Family Room Tour this spring, you may be familiar with tracks numbers 6 and 8, “Sisters & Brothers” and “Come To The Table.” These two songs were just a few of the many songs played on the tour, yet they bring an important theme to Something Different. The songs both focus on the fact that we as Christians are united by the love of Christ, along with track no. 9, “Ain’t Nobody (Till You’re Loved).” This secondary theme is important to the central message of the album, because Christians can only truly spread the “something different” that Christ brings when they are standing together.
The songs I have reviewed are just a few of the outstanding tracks on Something Different, because I could truly write a whole review about every song. I enjoyed the musicality displayed in this album, and the relevant messages of the songs to a wide variety of listeners. I see that the diversity of the music styles will make Something Different appeal to a vast audience. It is apparent from the musical accomplishments displayed that Sidewalk Prophets truly is a band that is “something different.”
